How to measure
- Use a soft tape measure, or a piece of string you can lay against a ruler.
- Place it about 1 cm (half an inch) above your eyebrows and ears.
- Keep it level all the way around and run it across the widest part of the back of your head.
- Read the number where the tape meets the start. Repeat once and use the larger value.
How to use
- Wrap a soft tape measure around your head, about 1 cm (half an inch) above your eyebrows and ears, and across the fullest part of the back of your head.
- Pick centimeters or inches and enter the number. Your sizes appear below and your row is highlighted in the chart.
- If you land between sizes, choose the larger one for a snug cap or when you wear thick hair. Measure two or three times and use the average.
How it works
A US hat size is the diameter of your head in inches, if the head were a circle. So it is the circumference in inches divided by π, rounded to the nearest eighth. A 57 cm head is 22.4 inches around, which is 7.14 across, and rounds to 7 1/8.
UK sizes run one eighth smaller than US sizes for the same head, so 7 1/8 in the US is 7 in the UK. European sizes are simply the circumference in centimeters.
Letter sizes group neighboring numbers: S covers about 55 to 56 cm, M 57 to 58 cm, L 59 to 60 cm and XL 61 to 62 cm. Brands differ by a centimeter or so, so check the maker's own chart when it has one.
FAQ
What is the most common hat size?
Adult heads are most often 56 to 59 cm around, which is a US 7 to 7 3/8 and a medium or large.
How do I measure my head without a tape measure?
Use a piece of string or a phone charging cable, mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat against a ruler. A strip of paper works too.
What if I am between two sizes?
Take the larger size. A hat that is a little loose can be padded with a hat sizing strip, but one that is too tight cannot be stretched much, especially a fitted cap.
Do adjustable and baseball caps follow this chart?
Fitted caps use US sizes exactly. One-size and snapback caps usually fit 56 to 61 cm, and children's sizes usually start around 48 cm.
