Reaction Time Test

Click, tap or press space to start

How to use

  1. Click the box, tap it or press the space bar to start. It turns red.
  2. Wait for it to turn green, then react as fast as you can. Pressing while it is still red counts as too soon and that try is repeated.
  3. After 5 tries you get your average and best time. Your best is saved in this browser.

How it works

The box turns green after a random wait of 1.5 to 4.5 seconds, so you cannot time it in advance.

Reaction time is measured with performance.now() from the first animation frame in which the box is green to the moment your press is detected.

Average = sum of the 5 times ÷ 5. Your screen refresh rate and input device add a few milliseconds, so compare results on the same device.

FAQ

What is a good reaction time?

For a visual cue most people score between 200 and 300 ms. Under 200 ms is fast, and consistent results matter more than one lucky try.

Why is my score slower on my phone?

Touch screens and slower displays add delay. A wired mouse on a high refresh rate monitor usually gives the lowest numbers.

Is my best score uploaded anywhere?

No. It is stored only in your browser's local storage and you can clear it with the reset button.
