Tile Calculator
- Boxes
- Total area
- Tiles before waste
How to use
- Choose feet and inches, or metres and centimetres.
- Add each area as a width and length. Add more rows for L-shaped rooms or several rooms.
- Enter the tile size, grout gap, waste percentage and, if you know it, tiles per box.
How it works
Each tile covers its own size plus one grout gap on two sides: (tile width + gap) × (tile length + gap). Tiles = total area ÷ that footprint.
Waste is added on top, then the total is rounded up to whole tiles. Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up.
Typical waste is 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonals or patterns, and more for small or irregular rooms. Buying one extra box keeps a spare for repairs.
FAQ
How much waste should I allow?
Ten percent covers cuts and breakage on a simple grid. Use 15% or more for diagonal layouts, herringbone or rooms with many corners.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into rectangles, add a row for each, and the tool adds them together.
What grout gap should I enter?
Typical gaps are 1/16 to 1/4 inch, or 2 to 5 mm. Enter 0 to ignore grout.
Should I subtract cabinets or a bathtub?
Only if you will not tile under them. Leave them out by not including that area.
