Time Duration Calculator
How to use
- Pick Times for two clock times on one shift, Dates for two full dates and times, or Add / subtract to move a date and time by a duration.
- Enter the start and the end. In Times mode an end earlier than the start means the period runs past midnight.
- Read the result in hours, minutes and seconds, plus decimal hours for payroll and timesheets.
How it works
Duration = end − start, counted in seconds. If the end time is earlier than the start, 24 hours are added, so 22:00 to 06:00 gives 8 hours.
Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60. 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours, not 7.45.
Dates are counted on the wall clock, so every calendar day is 24 hours. On a daylight saving change night the real elapsed time is one hour more or less than shown.
FAQ
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 is 0.5 and 45 is 0.75 of an hour.
How do I calculate a night shift?
Use Times mode and enter the start and end as they are, for example 22:00 and 06:30. The calculator adds a day when the end is earlier.
Can I subtract a lunch break?
Work out the shift length first, then use Add / subtract with the shift end as the start and subtract the break length.
