How to use
- Click the keyboard area once so it has focus, then press keys on your physical keyboard.
- A key turns solid while you hold it and stays tinted afterwards, so you can see which keys you have already checked.
- Hold several keys at once to test ghosting. The counter shows the most keys held at the same moment.
How it works
Each key press fires a browser keydown event. The tester reads two values from it: key, the character or action the key produced, and code, the physical position on the keyboard. The highlight follows code, so the same physical key lights up whatever layout or language you use.
The picture shows a standard US (ANSI) layout. On ISO, JIS or other layouts, the extra keys still register and appear in the log below, but they have no square on the drawing.
The page can only see what your browser receives. Some keys, such as Fn and many media or brightness keys, are handled by the keyboard hardware or the operating system and never reach the web page.
FAQ
Why does a key not light up?
Either the key is not working, or the browser never receives it. Fn, Print Screen on some systems and many media keys are intercepted before the page sees them. Try the key in another app to tell the difference.
What is keyboard ghosting?
Many keyboards share wiring between keys, so pressing three or four at once can make a key fail to register or a phantom key appear. Hold the combinations you use in games, such as W, A and Space together, and check that every key lights up. Gaming keyboards with N-key rollover avoid the problem.
Can I test a phone or tablet keyboard?
This tool needs a physical keyboard. On-screen keyboards on phones do not report key positions in a reliable way, so most keys will not light up. Connect a Bluetooth or USB keyboard to test it.
Does the page record what I type?
No. Key presses are shown on screen and kept only in memory until you leave the page. Nothing is sent anywhere. Avoid typing passwords here anyway, since the last keys are displayed.
