Morse Code Translator

How to use

  1. Type plain text in the top box to get Morse code, or paste dots and dashes in the bottom box to get text.
  2. Separate letters with a space and words with a slash. Three or more spaces also count as a word break.
  3. Press Play to hear the code, set the speed with the WPM slider, and press Stop at any time.

How it works

The translator uses International Morse Code (ITU-R M.1677): 26 letters, 10 digits and common punctuation such as . , ? / @ and parentheses.

Timing follows the standard ratios. A dot is 1 unit, a dash is 3, the gap inside a letter is 1, between letters 3 and between words 7.

Speed uses the PARIS standard, so one unit lasts 1200 ÷ WPM milliseconds. At 20 WPM a dot is 60 ms long.

FAQ

Why do some characters turn into #?

Morse has no code for them, for example accented letters or emoji. The characters it skipped are listed under the boxes.

Can I paste Morse with other symbols?

Yes. Middle dots, bullets and long dashes are read as dots and dashes, and both / and | work as word separators.

What speed should a beginner use?

Many learners start around 15 to 20 WPM for each letter and leave longer gaps between them. Slower letter speeds make it harder to hear each letter as one sound.
